Harambee Kingston NY, Inc on at the next phase of the Pine Street African Burial Ground Memorial.
Our goal is to unveil to the public the new Memorial Monument during Juneteenth 2026.
Juneteenth 2026 will also make the time when all of the exhumed remains will return home from SUNY New Platz with a reburial ceremony. Harambee Kingston does not plan to do any additional excavations. We have proven to the City of Kingston, Kingstonians and the greater community that this was and still is a burial ground of enslaved and freed Africans and African American.

Brief History of
The Pine Street African Burial Ground
The Pine Street African Burial Ground was unearthed in Kingston, NY, in 1888, only to be neglected shortly thereafter. It was later rediscovered by the homeowner during a basement renovation project.
Harambee, Inc. was established by Tyrone Wilson after the Kingston Land Trust encouraged him to consider taking ownership and stewardship of the African Burial Ground situated at 157 Pine Street, Kingston, NY. In 2021, after years of fundraising and fostering community support along with partnerships with KLT and Scenic Hudson, the deed was officially transferred to Harambee, Inc.
Since that time, the site has been surveyed and documented by Professor Joe Diamond and his students from the Department of Archaeology at SUNY New Paltz, NY. Their findings confirmed the existence of human remains belonging to enslaved Africans, buried in clustered areas.
The youth design team engaged in envisioning an architectural layout for the African Burial Ground and its surrounding area, emphasizing remembrance, reflection, and cultural education.
In August 2023 and 2024, additional archaeological excavations was completed with a new cohort of students under Professor Joe Diamond' and Kenneth Nystrom's guidance.. Stay connected by joining the Harambee Kingston NY Mailing List for the latest news and updates. ASE!
