Each one brings a unique set of skills and expertise to our organization.
Carl Brown: President
Carl Brown was born and raised in Kingston, NY and comes from 9 generations in Ulster County. He is married to his wife Christine of 49 Years and has three children Jennifer, Corey and Christina, along with 5 grandkids and 4 great grandkids. Carl was a former employee of IBM for 20 years who was in Information Technology Management with experience in writing graphical user interface applications for businesses and end user platforms. He left IBM in 1992 and was hired by Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque, NM. In 1995 he was recruited by United Airlines to work on an International Application that would be used by Sales representatives to foster selling more seats on their aircraft for international flights. After leaving United Airlines, he moved back to his Hometown of Kingston, NY in 2013. He is also on WGHQ Radio as a Host after being on as a guest in 2015. In 2013 he joined the Ulster County Community Action Board of Directors, where he serves as the Vice President since 2018. Also in 2013, He joined the Ulster County Human Rights Commission and since 2019 has been serving as the Chairman of the Ulster County Human Rights Commission. Due to his complaints on youth being incarcerated, he and another commissioner researched and brought Restorative Justice to Ulster County as an alternative to School suspension to keep kids out of the School to Prison Pipeline. He also serves as the President of Harambee, an organization who is trying to create programs within the County to educate people on African Culture and Arts while also serving as stewards of the Pine Street African Burial Grounds and bringing African American events to the area.
Tyrone WIlson: Founder
Tyrone’s life experience is working with youth. He began working with youth as a teenager at his first summer youth job in Harlem at the YWCA.
Tyrone has devoted his life to various community positions: football coach, basketball coach, team leader, House manager, anger management coach, firefighter, assistant director of an afterschool program in Harlem.
As the Executive Director of Harambee, Tyrone uses his life experiences to show youth how to prosper in their struggles and how to cope productively while facing life’s challenges. "Each one, teach one" is the motto Tyrone lives by.
Building future leaders to become the next generation frontline mentors will be the fruit of Tyrone’s countless years of service.
As Executive Director of Harambee, Tyrone’s organization presented Ulster County with one of the first full- and event-filled calendars for the entire Black History Month. His work continues with an initiative to bring respect due to an African-American burial site to be recognized as a historic site.
Mr. Wilson is also the current Human Rights Commissioner of Ulster County.
Frank Waters: Director of Marketing & Communication
Frank Waters is an award-winning entrepreneur, author and community organizer. He is the visionary and lead organizer of Black History Month Kingston, an annual celebration within Kingston New York that has captivated thousands of people and assisted in producing over 130 events within 4 years.
He is also co-founder and Executive Director of MyKingstonKids, a 501 (c) 3 organization that focuses on creating, producing and promoting child-related events, activities and content for families in the Kingston and Hudson Valley area.
Waters is known to be a visionary and dedicated community member. He participates as a board member within various organizations and is skilled as a graphic/web designer by trade.
Christopher Lowery-Warren, Board Member
Christopher is the owner of local businesses including Warren Contracting and Royalty Enterprises (which includes but is not limited to, event and catering services).
Outside of his busy work schedule Christopher also balances being a devout husband and loving father.
Christopher’s passion for music, people, and good cuisine are just some of the qualities he possesses that make him an asset as part of Harambee's Outreach Committee.
Christopher has been volunteering within the community since he was 12 years old. He has worked alongside numerous community leaders in order to both improve and make changes in his community.
Over the years he has grown a love for his community and the work he does. With Christopher's passion and dedication alongside his team he is excited to see what’s in store for Harambee!!!!
Sharline Bevier : Treasurer
Sharline Bevier has been a resident of Kingston, NY since 2005. She is currently a license Group Family Daycare Provider and has worked in the education field for over 45 years. She is also a Foster and Adoptive parent. Sharline is interested in the issues of People of Color (POC) and that is why Harambee came to her. She strongly supports Harambee’s mission statement and has been with Harambee since the beginning. A Board Member since 2017.
Shalawn Brown: Board Member
Shalawn Brown (Shai) has been a resident in Ulster County for 8 years. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology Cum Laude. She is currently attending college for her Master’s degree in Social Work while working as an Office Manager. Why Harambee, she stands with Harambee’s mission statement. Shai wants to be a part of an organization that helps others, bring people together, share her culture, as well as being a vessel of support. Shai started as a volunteer with Harambee and became a Board Member in 2020.
